About

Chris Loper as a young man flying through the air on skis dressed up like an idiot.

My Story

After graduating from college, I spent my 20s living as a ski bum. My aim was to have as much fun as possible. I had no long-term plans and no career. It was glorious.

But then I got injured. Repeatedly.

I couldn’t work on my feet anymore, and I couldn’t play in the mountains, so I became severely depressed. I self-medicated with alcohol, marijuana, and pain pills, which only made things worse. I felt incapable of focusing and hopelessly lazy. I knew what I needed to do to make my life better, but I just wasn’t doing it.

So I began studying the science of mental health, optimal brain function, and behavioral change. I used proven strategies to change my habits, swapping out addictions for healthy routines. I invested time and energy into improved brain health, which increased my willpower, happiness, and ability to focus.

And over the last decade, I’ve turned my life around dramatically. …

My Mission

… I became a tutor, academic coach, and blog writer for Northwest Educational Services. I studied the neuroscience of learning and applied it to both my work with students and my own personal growth.

I taught group classes about mental health and habit change. I created a self-improvement blog called Becoming Better to share what I had learned more widely. And I began working one-on-one with other adults who were struggling with behavioral change.

You’re probably carrying around a lot of self-doubt, worrying that you don’t have what it takes to succeed, worrying that there’s something wrong with you. I want to help you discard those worries and and unlock your potential.

You’re probably carrying around untrue limiting beliefs. I want to help you replace those psychological burdens with helpful mindsets.

You’re probably not aware of the many tools and strategies that make success easier. I want to show how to use these techniques to consistently move in the right direction.

My mission is to help you live an extraordinary life. …

My Life Now

… I’ve been completely clean and sober since March 23rd, 2015.

I meditate for 20 minutes each morning, which has greatly improved my ability to focus.

I’ve optimized my nutrition and sleep, which has resulted in better brain health and greater willpower.

I work out and do physical therapy exercises every day. As a result, I’ve healed my injuries, so I can once again hike and ski.

I’ve written a humorous memoir titled Wood Floats and Other Brilliant Observations.

I’m married to a brilliant, beautiful woman. We’re passionate about birding and board games.

We live in Issaquah, WA, where I’m the owner of South Cove Tutoring. I make a good living working less than 40 hours per week.

My life is rewarding and meaningful despite being unconventional. Yours can be too.
